You have probably heard of the nasallang though not everyone knows exactly how it is done. Although it looks like a straight long barbell piercing both the nostrils via the septum, it is actually three piercings – two nostrils and the septum!

Quite unusual, this combination piercing involves piercing the left and right nostril, as well as the septum at the same level so that a single barbell of suitable length can pass through the three piercings.

Cliff Cadaver – the famous piercer popularized the nasallang piercing. Some people get all three piercings in the nasallang simultaneously although it really does not make a difference. This is also referred to as a three in one industrial of the nose.

In the nasallang, the septum piercing passes via the middle of the nose – the part separating the right from the left nostril, which is called the septum. The septum piercing goes through that soft portion on the septum and not through the cartilage. The actual procedure is just like the usual needle piercing with a clamp.

The nasallang piercing could take about three to four months to heal. Your piercer will likely tell you to use salt soaks twice a day. Nasallangs are a great way to stand out from the crowd with a body piercing!

We generally think of nose piercings as nostril piercings. Some people also get their septum pierced. An unusual nostril piercing is the high nostril piercing that is done near the bridge of the nose, much higher than where regular nostril piercings are done. High nostril piercings might require a little more care than the usual nostril piercing although the actual piercing is not all that painful.

For a high nostril piercing, your piercer would need a caliper, straight nostril jewelry and a receiving tube. The spot to be pierced is far thicker than other nose piercing areas. If you are wondering what the calipers might be used for, don’t fret. They are for bending the jewelry to suit your nose as well as any swelling that might develop after the piercing. The swelling happens on the inside of the nose.

It is tricky getting the high nostril piercing done and you need a piercer who has got experience with this stuff. Normally, an 18-gauge needle with 20-gauge jewelry is used. The piercer, of course chooses based on the individual nose being pierced. Some bleeding might be there, but not much; after all, skin is being pierced!

Your role in the entire process is to follow aftercare instructions exactly the way you are told. Obviously you are not supposed to handle the jewelry – if you do disturb it, you might develop a swelling. Since you need to make sure the inside is okay, you will be advised to use a sea salt spray up your nose a few times a day for roughly a month. Never touch your piercing without washing your hands well!

High nostril piercings take longer to heal than the usual nostril piercing and this could be anything from two to six months. Keep checking with your piercer periodically to see whether your piercing has healed fully. Usually, nostril screws or labret studs are used in high nostril piercings.

Double check to make sure that the piercer is an expert with a steady and firm hand. Many piercers will prepare you for what to expect so that you don’t get all worked up.

But exactly where you locate your high nostril piercing depends on your nose and your preference!

Bridge piercing is a type of a nose piercing that is the most difficult to prevent from growing out of the skin. Yet it will give you a whole lot of opportunities to express yourself like this guy here – he attached spectacles to his bridge piercing and a new trend in the body piercing got invented!

And now a bit from bridge piercing history. The first person known to the general public to have a bridge piercing was Erl van Aken – a body modification pioneer from the 80ies and 90ies.

As you can see this guy has a hell lot of piercings on his body (would you like to see him naked – click here! ) and for his bridge piercing he’s been using both bridge rings and bridge barbells.

But I’d suggest, and I think that any professional body piercer will tell you this, it’s better go for some body jewelry that is better suited for surface piercings. You see, the bridge piercing is essentially a surface piercing and it has quite a high rate of migration. As you can naturally imagine, nostrils and septum can’t really push the nose piercing out and your body is kind of forced to keep the piercing in.

However, the bridge of the nose is a place where both sides of the piercing project outside the body on the same surface, hence the name ‘surface piercing’ and the high rejection rate. It’s easier for the body to push the piercing out rather than heal the wound forming a nice hole with a new skin it.

Anyway, if you take good care of your bridge piercing and follow the bridge piercing afercare guidelines, you should be on the safe side. The initial bridge jewelry is also an essential element to make sure the fresh piercing heals properly and you don’t have to worry it would leave a scar afer rejection, as may happen.

So suface bars, curved barbells and body jewelry made of supple materials like bioplast and PTFE would be the best option if you consider getting a bridge piercing for yourself.

So why mention pain first when talking about septum piercing?

Septum Piercings are rumoured to be very painful. Read, for example, this septum piercing story and you’ll see that the very moment when the needle goes through the wall between your nostrils can be fairly painful indeed. But this is only true for a minority. In the majority of cases, the piercing is a simlpe pinch.

However painful, it doesn’t prevent thousands of people all around the world getting septum piercings and even stretching them to very large gauges!

And it definitely didn’t hold back the ancient warrior tribes from piercing their nose cartilages!

New Guinea, Solomon Island and Australian Aborigines performed septum piercings on young boys as a part of marking their transition into a manhood. Native Americans also wore septum jewelry. A tribe known for this type of a nose piercing was Shawnee and even their leader Tecumseh was depicted wearing a nose ring through his nose cartilage.

And Panama’s Kuna nation wears septum rings to this date, so as we can see this type of nose piercing has been popular in the past and will be popular in future thanks to the widespread body modification followers all around the world.

Another rumour about the Septum Piercing is that the piercing goes through cartilage.

When the septum piercing is performed (traditionally not smaller than 14ga), the very nose cartilage isn’t actually pierced! The needle goes right under the septum and passes above the base of the nose.

Yes, due to the location of the piercing hole, it is not always possible to get the septum piercing right – usually it will be a bit crooked on one side. However, in hands of a skillful piercer you’ll definitely get it sorted the best way possible.

And by the way, the beauty of a septum piercing is that it’s one of a few facial piercings that is invisible to the others, in case if you don’t want to. Just put a piercing retainer in the septum piercing, and no-one will ever tell that you have your septum pierced!

The tiny little nose studs inserted in a small nostril piercing are discreet and sometimes barely noticeable.

I can imagine anyone from a secretary at the reception desk in a large global company, to a young schoolgirl wearing a tiny little diamond nose stud. They are a fashion to suit people in all walks of life.

But or course, there are other nostril piercings which may seem not as innocent as the previously described one.

There are many folks who love stretching their piercings and the nostril piercing isn’t an exemption. Large gauge nostril piercings are becoming more common among body modification fanatics and I guess we’ve all seen guys and gals with large plugs inserted in the either side of their nose.

But now let’s look at how the nostril piercing became popular here in the West.

Well, the direct inspiration for this was the Indian girls who wear nostril piercings like studs and rings to this day.

And when the hippies of the 60′s and 70′s became very attached to the eastern religions (let’s remember George Harrison from the Beatles!) – not before long they began piercing their nostrils and wear nose body jewelry.

So as opposed to the navel piercing for example, which went mainstream back in the early 90′s, the nose piercing has a longer history.

Double nostril piercings, nasallang piercings, multiple nostril piercings and many other forms are all very popular nowadays.
