Nose Piercing Aftercare Tips & Tricks

Well, you just got your new nose piercing. Congratulations!

However, before you can enjoy your fresh nose piercing, you have to follow some simple nose piercing aftercare tips to avoid anything unpleasant!

Most likely you’ll be given aftercare guidelines at the piercing studio. Nevertheless,  I’ll give you a few universal nose piercing aftercare recommendations. If you are unsure about anything in this article, or if our advice contradicts advice given to you by your piercing professional, you can contact me by leaving a message at the end of the post. I’ll do my best to help.

So, what’s going to happen right after the nose piercing is done? The fresh nose piercing will swell up a little bit. But don’t worry, it’s normal. A piercing is a wound, and wounds take time to heal. The swelling is going to disappear within the next few days, and the pain will subside as well, if there’s any.

There a several types of nose piercing – like nostril piercing, septum piercing, bridge piercing etc. Pain during the piercing and the healing periods will differ. However, the piercing cleaning guidelines are more or less the same.

So the first nose piercing aftercare recommendation – never touch your fresh nose piercing with dirty hands. Use common sense and wash your hands before touching, cleaning or moving your fresh nose ring, stud or barbell.

Secondly – cleaning. This is pretty simple as well. You just have to get a saline solution and clean the nose piercing 2 – 3 times daily. If you can’t get one in a drugstore, you can make the saline solution yourself. Just dilute about 4 teaspoons of non iodized sea salt to 1 gallon of boiled water and the cleansing liquid is ready to use.

For fresh nose piercing cleaning you can use simple cotton buds. Just don’t forget to change them when cleaning the inside and the outside of the piercing to avoid cross-contamination. At the end, when you’ve cleaned the fresh nose piercing, just wipe the excess moisture off using a new dry cotton wool bud and that’s it!

Another nose piercing aftercare tip – when applying make-up, avoid covering your fresh nose piercing with it. This one is obviously more relevant to girls. And if you’ve just got a septum piercing, you can’t really get your make-up inside of the nose! But for other types of nose piercing – nostril piercing and bridge piercing – please keep in mind not to apply make-up to the area.

The last nose piercing aftercare tip – don’t try to insert a new nose ring before the piercing has healed well. The new skin that forms inside the fresh nose piercing is very tender, and you can damage it very easily. So it’s better to wait until the piercing is well healed, it’s not tender to touch and not swollen or  red in color.

The approximate healing times for the nose piercings are following – nostril piercing 4 – 6 weeks. Septum piercing – 1 – 3 months. And bridge piercing can take up to a year. So as you can see, the easiest to heal is the simple nostril piercing, but the most difficult is the bridge piercing because it’s essentially a surface piercing.

Well, that’s it about nose piercing aftercare – everything is simple and you just have to use common sense. Wash hands before touching the nose ring, clean it a few times a day with saline solution, and keep the nose ring, stud or barbell in until the piercing is well healed.

And, of course, if you notice any discharge from the fresh nose piercing, go back to the piercing studio or visit your doctor. Especially – if the piercing is swollen and it’s oozing yellow or green substances.

i got my nostril pierced today at a friend’s shop. it was pierced with a gun and while it didnt hurt at all and the price was right, i have a big stud in my nose for at least a month.i suggest a needle and sea salt DOES work, or lavender oil i got at my grocery store with warm water and a CLEAN face towel.i have no pain unless i inadvertantly rub my nose :) Hope that helps anyone and enjoy your piercings!

thank you for the advice! i am getting mine done in less than five months and was wondering how long do you have to do this cleaning process for? do i just do it for a certain amount of weeks or all of the time?

  15. William on Mon, 15th Mar 2010 11:48 am

Healing time can be from 3-12 months depending on the amount of cartilage pierced. A strict cleaning routine should be followed. Care is needed throughout the life of the piercing but its not as important as the time during healing of the piercing wound. When you get your piercing done, your piercer will give you more specific instructions.

I just got my nose pierced on Monday (and today is Friday.) I’ve noticed that it doesn’t hurt and there isn’t any swelling or redness, or even discharge. Is it remotely possible that it’s healing faster or is this just normal?
    Thanks, Brit

  20. Sarah on Sun, 23rd May 2010 3:03 pm

To Raina: Don’t use antibacterial ointment on your piercing! On the tube it says DO NOT USE ON PUNCTURE WOUNDS — a piercing is a puncture would. It will trap things in the wound and make it worse. Only use a sea salt rinse — nothing else.

I got my nose done in the middle of March…..The young man said they were out of aftercare….so until I got the h2Ocean I used the homemade stuff with distilled water. Problem is he told me everything wrong….He told me to rotate my ring as much as possible, .Now it looks like there is permanent redness, and a bump like scaring. It doesn’t hurt per say, only when I try to take the ring out….I waited longer than the 4-6 weeks because some of the medication I take can hinder healing. He never gave me any instructions and now the shop is no longer there. The nose ring still slips around and the C sticks out at times and I have to shove it back into my nose. I need desperate help. There is no infection, should I go to a bigger gauge? Have someone else take my nose screw out and replace it? Like I said it is a bit tender still and I use the h2Ocean a few times a day still.HELP!!!!

My daughter had her nose pierced. It was a local shop and it was recommened to her. The ring was put in so fast I hadn’t the chance of making sure it ws all clean material used. She formed a bump around the area of the ring and was being told to pop it an duse the solution. I told her not to pop the bump, use the solution, perxiode and let it heal as it should. After a few days we noticed it’s just not seeming to heal nor had the bump gone down so she decided to take it out. Question: Should I take her to the doctor, will the bump ever go away and is there anything other I can do to make sure it heals, bumps goes away and suggestions as to what and were she can go to have it re pierced later time? Please help her. thanks!

WEll i need help because today i got my nose pierced and im 13. the piercer did Not give me no Cleaning products and to only clean it with soap and water. and i dont think its right. and do i clean it Today when i got it a couple of hours ago?

  29. Lindsay on Tue, 29th Jun 2010 7:15 pm

You should clean the piercing about 3 times a day, never touch it with unwashed hands. also, I use SALINE solution. It helps to clean and keep all debris out of the piercing. Apply with a q-tip around the piercing (on both sides).

DO NOT USE HYDROGEN PEROXIDE OR RUBBING ALCOHOL!!!

Using these can actually keep the piercing from healing properly.

My Piercing artist said after 3-4 weeks i could bring him a new nose jewelery and he would change it for me. You should not ever take out the piercing while in the healing stages unless you have a bad infection (Check with your piercing artist or doctor before deciding you have an infection)

do not assume the piercing is fully healed just because you have no pain or redness.. I wouldn’t feel my piercings were fully healed til after 1 year. After about 3-4 months you should be able to safely change your own piercings. Stick with gold, titanium or surgical steel piercings.

thanks! this is really helpful. I got my nose pierced about three days ago, its a nostril stud. I was told not to touch it, but sometimes I can’t help it, because once in a while it slightly comes off, and it has come off completely twice already. I always have to push it in, maybe three to four times an hour. I wanted to know what are the signs of the beginning on infection? and is it normal for it to be sliding off occasionally? thanks

So I got my nose pierced 3 days ago on the right side of my nostrel. It’s red around the diamond && a little sore. But I’m concerned because the diamond appears to be sinking down into my skin. You can only see that I have my nose pierced if you look closely at it… I pushed it out a little from the inside because I was afraid of it growing into my nose this way, and it started bleeding… HELP PLEASE I’m so worried.

  32. Val on Tue, 27th Jul 2010 8:32 pm

Had my nostril done today, the piercer was awesome in giving me information concerning aftercare. I will share what he told me as I don’t see one of the suggestions listed above.

    1. DO NOT TOUCH your piercing with unclean hands….

    2. DO USE the saline Solution several times a day to clean
around the piercing inside your nose and out with a q-tip.

    3. ALSO! WASH around your piercing with antibacterial soap, (DIAL or LEVER), for example when you are in the shower, let the water run on your piercing for about 5 minutes after cleaning around it with soap. He said that this is what prevents infections and Keloids (the bumps). Why this helps? Because your nose is a breeding ground for bacteria, and the antibacterial soap and water helps flush it out.

AND! you need to do all of the above for atleast 6 weeks.

I was told to pull out my nose stud and put bacitracin ointment on the stud and then push it back in and turn 3 times a day. Is this the case?

  36. M on Tue, 17th Aug 2010 10:10 pm

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER use cotton swabs, balls, Q-tips or any thing else that can leave any kind of fibers behind!!! I used Q-tips on my fist nostril piercing when cleaning against the advised care directions & after about 5-6 weeks it became swollen, red & looked infected. I had to take my ring out & the guy @ the shop told me it was prob bc a fiber got into my piercing. I have since had my nose re-pierced & used regular non-scented, non-dyed soap & water to clean as well as saline solution & it healed without any issues. So my advise use any cloth that that will not leave behind any fuzz or fibers.

I got my nose pierced five days ago now. The place of business had me initial a couple of papers on this and that. One of them was about the knowing how to clean the piercing. When it came time to pay, I still was not told how to keep It clean or how to do it or what to use. I began to question myself “Why do I initial where they ask when nothing was said or explained?” So I had to ask him. He told me contact solution about five times a day. Does this sound right? My co-worker said a saline solution and at night to put a round band aid over the nose stud to prevent it catching on the pillow or fingers catching it. Is that true? Is there anything else I need to know? How about bleeding? Should it still bleed or feel like a constant stuffy nose? I blow out blood every AM and when the day is over. Is that normal? Its not a boogery blood either. Its staight out blood.

there is one simple ayurvedic remedy to heal nose piercing. Heat a spoonful of mustard oil n let it cool a bit then add a little turmeric powder. Dab this oil on your nose with cotton when the oil is still warm. Mustard oil acts as a protective layer against germs and turmeric is a natural antiseptic. Warm oil also help in reducing the swelling if any. I have tried this n this is very effective. Don’t forget to wipe your nose with warm water before applying this and do this atleat thrice a day…hope this helps

okay, so, i got my nose pierced a few months ago in august, and it was going well, but unfortunately i wasn’t careful enough and i touched it a lot and played with it, and after having it for like two months, i changed it to a silver hoop. and it got really really infected, and maybe even torn, because i kept in catching it on things. so i put my old piercing back in, and everything seemed to get better instantly, because it was surgical steel, and so i’m guessing that’s what the problem was. but now it’s infected again, and it’s not really going away, i’ve been wayyyy more careful now, i wash it once a day with provon soap (the piercing place gave it to me) and i occasionally soak it with a sea salt solution, and i always rinse it very well after i clean it, i never touch it with dirty hands or play with it…..but it’s STILL infected and it’s got a little red bump on the side of it, that seems to come and go…i’m just so sick of this, and i just want it to get better. i’m regretting even getting it, as much as i love it, because of all the trouble it’s causing. help! thankss…

i went to get a nose piercing (nostril) with a friend. we were told to turn the ring and use a cotton swab with antibaterial soap and water, to clean inside and out. we have done this and it has been almost a week. we have both had leakage around piercing on outside. it has made the skin red and crusty. we were then told to put ointment on it. is there a better way to get this to heal properly?

  62. Christine on Thu, 24th Feb 2011 9:12 pm

Ok, I’m basically freaking out at the moment. lol.
Well, I got my nose pierced, it’ll be a week tomorrow. And the piercer told me that I should clean it with antibacteral soup. So my sister bought me the pump antibacteral hand soap. And so I would take a Qtip and run hot water/warm water over it then a little soap. When I would try to clean it the piercing would come out so I just took it out and cleaned the inside and out side, rinsed it and did the same with the jewal. Now I have a bumb inside my nose. Its sore and I’m scared that I might have done something really really wrong. The more I look on the internet for answers, the more scared I get. I really love my piercing and I hope and pray that I didn’t do anything bad. Please, please help me?

  63. admin on Fri, 25th Feb 2011 12:58 am

Taking the jewelry out was not a good idea. From reading your story, you might have an abscess. I cant be sure. Don’t take a chance though – go back to your piercer and they will give you free advice. If you pierced yourself, don’t be afraid to see a piercer – they will be glad to help you.

  64. Jessica Ribeiro on Mon, 28th Feb 2011 1:09 pm

I have had many piercings throughout the years and this is my third time piercing my nose (I had to take them out for jobs) Great after care is twice a day rinsing with water (no soaps, they can irritate) and then spraying it with saline wound care. Don’t turn it. You could also soak a cotton ball with the solution and hold to piercing for 5 minutes.
if it does get infected – which mine did because it got yanked slightly out by accident- then twice a day do a 5 minute sea salt water soak. Mix some sea salt with some warm water, soak a cotton pad (i prefer them over the balls) and soak the piercing for 5 minutes. Then rinse out with the saline solution. 79. Megan on Sat, 7th May 2011 8:43 am

Well my piercer told me to wait at least three months before I can change out the ring. and even then I had to go back to the tatoo parlor so they can change the ring for me because they would need to be careful becaue it wouldn’t be completely healed. How long do I have to wait to change it on my own?

    Hi there,

I am looking at getting my nose pierced however I am not allowed to wear it in for work. Would it be a bad idea to get it pierced if i have to remove it for work 5 days a week?

To stop it healing over i could insert the ring every so often but not sure if thats advisable.

    Thanks

I got my nose pierced a few hours ago and I LOVE it! However, I am concerned about using my netipot with my new piercing. The solution I use in the netipot is saline solution. I need to make sure that I am not passing bacteria past the piercing area, but would like to use it to clean the piercing. Any recommendations? Thank you in advance.

I got my nose pierced about 5 weeks ago. I’ve had no problems with it, I did change the stud to a smaller gauge at 4 weeks because the 18 gauge they pierced it with had a long stem that bothered the inside of my nose. I’ve had no problems with it other than it seems to be pushing out of the nostril and won’t stay flush against the outside. So is this just a jewlery type issue or I’d it due to changing it too soon? I’m thinking of putting the 18 gauge back in. What should I do?

  86. MissKrohn on Mon, 13th Jun 2011 2:56 pm

I got my nose done yesterday and I absolutely LOVE it. This guide was really helpful because I was never told cleaning instructions for it and I was told to turn it a few times a day to make sure the skin didn’t heal to tight around the stud.. I have an L shaped stud and I hate it. It makes me look like I have a booger hanging out my nose and I always feel like I need to blow my nose when really it’s just the stud rubbing against the inside.. My real question though is that when I look at it, there’s dry blood around the gem part of the stud, and it almost looks like it is sinking into my nose.. Is this normal at all? I didn’t have it pierced with the gun, just a needle and it didn’t hurt much.. I’ve forgotten about it a few times and rubbed my nose which hurt alot, and sleeping doesn’t help it much either.. Should I just put a round bandage on it when I sleep.. but put a bit of cleaning stuff in the pad inside the bandage so it cleanses it while I sleep?

Hey, I got my nose done on memorial day weekend in May. I feel like this is a stupid question butfor the most part it doesnt hurt or anything unless I mess with it a lot. There isn’t any redness or anything on the outide of my nose, but it looks weird to me on the inside. There is alot of skin or tissue that is around the back of my stud. Is it Normal for there to be this much tissue around the stud or is this a sign of Infection? Like I said there isnt pain or much irritation just a lot of skin. Guess i’m just paranoid. Help please?

  91. Sam on Thu, 7th Jul 2011 12:17 am

I just got my nose piercing today and I really do like it. It has been something I’ve wanted for a while now. As I’m searching online for some accurate info on how to clean and take care of my nostril piercing, I noticed there are a lot of questions still and people are questioning eachothers remedies. About a yr ago I went with my auntie to get her piercing and they gave her a little bottle of a special disinfectant for piercings and told her to clean it multiple times a day, to wear a bandaid on it at night, and to keep your hands and that area clean at all times. I got the exact instructions at the exact same place and noticed my aunt had not had an infection , herself! To make it clear, some remedies ate going to work for some people while others may not be so lucky. As far as the bandaid goes, it is to prevent the ring from falling out of your nose at night because if it falls and it is a fresh piercing, it can close in less than a half hour! After a few months, the stress of that will be gone and you most likely won’t have to wear it anymore. It is moreso for ppl who sleep on their stomachs. Please be patient as we are all learning new things and keep in mind that you made the decision to get the piercing and that u must grin and bare it through the tough times. Eventually, if there was some difficulties, time will make them pass and you will enjoy your piercing.

Just got my nostril pierced today! Love it! I went to a tattoo and body piercing place so I knew it would be alright. The guy told me to clean it with antibacterial soap though so I am wondering if the stuff you talk about in the article is better for it? One of my friends asked what gauge size it is. I don’t know. So he said it should be on my paperwork but the only thing I got back was my receipt. The gauge doesn’t matter until I go to change it, right? And since its just a bone should I put a precautional bandied on it at night to make sure it doesn’t pop out? There is also the fear that the bandied would pull it out at removal. Thanks! :)

    hi!
i got my nose pierced on Tuesday and it randomlly started bleeding today, from the hole. not much blood was there but enough to make me paranoid! it is a bit sore on the inside and i think i may not be cleaning the inside of it properly as i am worried ill irritate it.
i had it pierced a few years ago however, a bump formed so i took it out. i am really worried the same thing will happen again! do you have any advice to avoid this possibly happening or are the chances pretty high that it will?

Have had my nose pierced for about 6 mos love it!!! To those with keloids or bumps I was told to soak in saline solution… Nose in a shot glass for 10 mins twice a day- also I was told that at anytime I feel like I have a problem just to go back to soaking! Along with cleaning with antibacterial soap. I have recently switched from a L shape to a Screw, and it keeps being visible through my nostril how can I fix this? I bought a nice one in 14k gold with a diamond- so, I am not going to buy another one. I have seen comments about pinching it, but nothing about how to do it

Just got my nose pierced today, and the gun stung like a bitch!
It doesnt really hurt now tho, just throbs. Well i was just admiring my amazing nose piercing then i noticed the inside was swollen! And i thought “oh!” damn, is it supposed to be like that?…. then i started touching it and poking it and i thought oh my god…. its infected! :O the man at the piercing studio didnt even tell me what i was supposed to do really, so i kinda worried. especially when my dad said to me that if i dont twist it then my skin will heal over the piercing, because its acting as a wound in my body. So thank you so so much for this info. It was needed! This is gonna be bookmarked in my browswer :) Thank you.

Hey guys! So I pierced my nose yesterday with a trusted piercer who has pierced my belly button and my moms tongue etc. Today when I woke up the stud was sticking out a bit. He said this would happen and wouldn’t lay flat until healed completely, but i was wondering if this has occurred to anyone else? also today since it’s sticking out I accidentally brushed it with my hand and it fell out. Immediately I sprayed my nose with bactine and the stud and put it back in. When it fell out it bled a little bit. I was wondering if it’s going to be okay?

carlie, buy some camomile tea bags soak one in hot water then apply it to your nose piecing have it as hot as you can stand it but not too hot that it will burn. Do this 3 times a day and the bump and any infection will be gone. I was told this by a professional piercer and have used it myself with great success.
